Genus Tomistoma is a group of freshwater crocodilians that are commonly found in Southeast Asia. They are also known by various other names including false gharials, Sunda gharials, and Malayan gharials. False gharials are often confused with the true gharials, which comprise only one species- Gavialis gangeticus. However, false gharials have a distinct morphology and are classified in their own separate genus, Tomistoma. The name "Tomistoma" is derived from the Greek words "tomein" meaning to cut and "stoma" meaning mouth, referring to their sharp teeth. False gharials are an important species in Southeast Asia and their conservation status is listed as vulnerable due to habitat loss and hunting.
