Gorilla gorilla beringei, commonly known as the mountain gorilla, is a subspecies of the eastern gorilla. Synonyms for this species include Gorilla beringei, Gorilla gorilla subspecies beringei, and Gorilla beringei beringei. This subspecies is found in the mountainous regions of the Virunga Massif and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mountain gorilla is critically endangered, with an estimated population of around 1,000 individuals. Conservation efforts have been put in place to protect this species, including anti-poaching patrols and community-based tourism initiatives. The mountain gorilla is a symbol of the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect endangered species and their habitats.
