The Gulf of California, often referred to as the Sea of Cortez, is a unique body of water that lies between the Baja California peninsula and mainland Mexico. It is named after the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortes and is home to over 900 species of fish and other marine life. Other names for the Gulf of California include the Vermilion Sea, due to the reddish-brown color of its waters, and the Gulf of Las Californias, which was used during the Spanish colonial period. Additionally, it is referred to as the Gulf of California and the Gulf of Alisitos. Regardless of its name, the Gulf of California remains a stunning and vital ecosystem.
