The Gulf of Carpentaria, located in the northern part of Australia, is also known as the Carpentaria Sea, Carpentaria Gulf, and the Gulf of Carpentaria proper. It is bordered by Queensland to the east, the Northern Territory to the south and west, and the Arafura Sea to the north. Some other synonyms for the Gulf of Carpentaria include the Carpentaria Bay, Carpentaria Inlet, Gulf Carp, and Gulf Carpentaria Basin. Indigenous Australians call it Bynoe Harbour, which is also another name for the region. The Gulf is an important fishing area, tourism spot, and supports industries such as mining, agriculture, and pastoralism.
