The Gulf of Venice is an arm of the Adriatic Sea that is located in northeastern Italy. It is also known as the Gulf of Trieste or the Adriatic Gulf. The Gulf of Trieste is the portion of the gulf that is located between Italy and Slovenia. The name "Gulf of Venice" is somewhat of a misnomer, as Venice is located at the northernmost point of the gulf and does not represent the entire body of water. Other synonyms for the Gulf of Venice include the Gulf of Istria, Gulf of Kvarner, Gulf of Rijeka, and the Quarnaro. These synonyms reflect the sections of the gulf that are closer to the surrounding countries of Croatia and Slovenia.
