Hacktivism, a portmanteau of hacking and activism, refers to actions taken by individuals or groups to promote political, social or ideological causes. The term has gained prominence over the last decade with the rise of technology and the internet. However, there are several synonyms that represent similar intentions and activities - cyberactivism, netactivism and digital activism. All of these terms involve the use of online communication and technology to achieve goals related to social, political or economic empowerment, while also leveraging the power of hacking or digital breach to achieve these aims. As technology continues to mature, we can expect these terms to evolve in scope as well.
