A hit-and-run play is a term used in baseball which refers to a strategy of having a baserunner start to run towards the next base when the pitcher starts his delivery. The batter will then attempt to make contact with the ball, hitting it towards the opposite field to create a gap in the infield. However, there are other terms that can be used as synonyms for this play. Some of the examples include a sacrifice bunt, suicide squeeze, or safety squeeze. All of these plays involve the baserunner taking an aggressive approach to force the defense to make a decision, ultimately increasing the chances of scoring a run.
