Hydrodamalis is a scientific name given to the extinct species of northern fur seals that once existed in the Pacific Ocean. These massive creatures were commonly known as Steller's sea cows because they were first identified by the German explorer Georg Wilhelm Steller in the 18th century. Another synonym for Hydrodamalis is the Pacific sea cow. Some experts also refer to these gentle giants as Atka sea cows after the Aleutian Island of Atka, where they were first sighted. Unfortunately, due to overhunting by humans for their blubber and meat, Hydrodamalis is now extinct, with the last recorded sighting dating back to 1768.
