Interspersal refers to the act of inserting or scattering something among other things. Synonyms for interspersal include sprinkling, scattering, distribution, dispersion, diffusion and spotting. Each of these words has a slightly different connotation but all refer to the act of spreading something out in an even or random fashion. For example, you might sprinkle cinnamon sugar over a batch of cookies or scatter flower petals down an aisle at a wedding. Distribution might refer to the even allocation of resources, while dispersion usually signifies the spreading of something evenly over a wide area. Regardless of the synonym chosen, interspersal adds interest to a otherwise homogeneous group.
