Isopoda, commonly known as woodlice, roly-polies, or sowbugs, are a group of crustaceans that are found in almost every habitat on earth. Sometimes, these tiny creatures are also referred to as pillbugs, slaters or potato bugs. They are characterized by their segmented bodies and many legs, which they use to move about. Another synonym for isopoda is Oniscidea, which comes from the Greek words oniscos meaning "a kind of animal" and idein meaning "to see." There are over 5,000 species of isopods worldwide, and they play an important role in many ecosystems as decomposers, scavengers, and prey for other animals.
