Kaposi disease, also known as Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS), is a rare type of cancer that affects the skin and mucous membranes. Synonyms for this condition include multiple idiopathic hemorrhagic sarcoma, Kaposi sarcoma, and idiopathic multiple pigmented sarcoma. These terms are used interchangeably to refer to the same disease. Kaposi disease is characterized by the development of abnormal blood vessels and tumors in various parts of the body. It can manifest as red or purple lesions on the skin, mouth, lungs, or other organs. Although rare, Kaposi disease is more common among individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial for managing this condition effectively.
