Koasati is a Native American language spoken primarily in Louisiana and Texas. Synonyms for the word "Koasati" include "Coushatta," which is the name of the federally recognized tribe that speaks the language, and "Koasati inon" which means "the Koasati language." Another synonym is "Kousa," which was the original name given to the tribe by French explorers. Additionally, "Kowassa" and "Koasa" are sometimes used as variations of the name. The Koasati language is endangered, with only about 200 fluent speakers left in the world. Efforts are being made to preserve and revitalize the language through education and cultural programs.
