Koilocytes are a type of cell that often indicate an Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection in the cervix. As such, there are several synonyms for this term that are specific to the context of cervical screening and HPV testing. These include squamous metaplastic cells, dysplastic cells, atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US), and atypical cells of squamous origin (ASC-H). Clinicians may also refer to koilocytes as "koilocytotic atypia", which describes the characteristic cellular changes associated with HPV infection.
