Kuru is a rare, degenerative neurological disorder that affects the central nervous system. It is also known as "trembling disease" and "laughing sickness" due to the uncontrollable tremors and fits of laughter it produces. Synonyms for the term kuru include Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, mad cow disease, and prion disease, which are all similar disorders caused by abnormal proteins in the brain. Other synonyms for kuru include neurodegenerative disease, spongiform encephalopathy, and transmissible spongiform encephalopathy. Despite its rarity, kuru has been the focus of extensive research due to its unique transmission through cannibalism.
