A lap joint is a woodworking joint created by overlapping two pieces of wood and connecting them with screws, nails or glue. There are several synonyms for this type of joint. One of the most common is the cross-lap joint, which is created by cutting half the thickness of each board so they overlap perfectly. Other synonyms for lap joint include splice joint, scarf joint and half-lap joint. The half-lap joint is similar to the cross-lap joint but only one board is cut halfway through instead of both.
