Lauhala is a common term used in Hawaii, which refers to a type of hand-woven mat or basket made from the leaves of the Hawaiian hala tree. However, there are several other synonyms which are used to refer to this traditional Hawaiian craft. Some of the common synonyms of lauhala include pandan, screwpine, and screw palm. The term pandan is widely used in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands to describe the weaving material and the baskets made from it. Screwpine and Screw Palm are also used interchangeably with pandan in different cultures, and refer to the same type of tree and leaf material used in lauhala weaving. Regardless of the synonymous term used, lauhala weaving remains an integral component of Hawaiian cultural tradition.
