Madrasa is a term generally used to refer to Islamic religious schools, particularly in the Middle East and South Asia. In other parts of the world, these schools are known by different names. In India, for example, madrasa is called Darul Uloom, which means the house of knowledge. In Turkey, they are called medrese. In Malaysia and Indonesia, the terms pesantren or pondok are used to refer to these religious schools. In Africa, they are known as makaranta or kuttubiyyah. These different names may vary in usage and connotation depending on the cultural and historical context. Nonetheless, they all refer to institutions that provide Islamic education and religious teachings.
