Magicicada is a genus of insects that are well-known for their periodic emergence over various parts of the United States. Also known as periodical cicadas, these fascinating creatures remain underground for most of their lives and emerge every 13 or 17 years to mate, lay eggs and die. While "magicicada" is the scientific name for this genus of cicadas, there are several synonyms that are used interchangeably, including: 17-year locust, 13-year cicada, magic cicada, periodical cicada, and Brood X cicada. Regardless of the name, these insects provide a sight to behold and a symphony of sound that's hard to miss during their emergence periods.
