The magnetic equator refers to the imaginary line encircling the Earth where the geomagnetic field is horizontal. Synonyms for the magnetic equator include the equatorial magnetic anomaly, magnetic equatorial belt, and geomagnetic equator. The equatorial ionization anomaly is another term used to describe the region near the magnetic equator where ionization of the atmosphere is high. This region is also known as the Appleton anomaly, named after British physicist Edward Appleton. In addition to these synonyms, the magnetic equator is sometimes referred to as the dip equator or the magnetic dip equator due to the angle of the geomagnetic field lines with respect to the Earth's surface.
