Maturity-onset diabetes is a type of diabetes that typically develops in adults over the age of 40. Although it was previously known as type 2 diabetes, there are a number of other terms that can be used to refer to this condition. These include adult-onset diabetes, non-insulin dependent diabetes, and insulin-resistant diabetes. Some other less common synonyms for maturity-onset diabetes include type 1.5 diabetes, slow-onset diabetes, and latent autoimmune diabetes of adults (LADA). No matter what it is called, this condition is characterized by high blood sugar levels that can cause a wide range of complications if left untreated.
