Ketoacidosis-resistant diabetes is a medical condition characterized by a resistance to diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening complication of diabetes. This rare condition may also be referred to as Flatbush diabetes, type 1.5 diabetes, or ketosis-prone type 2 diabetes.
Flatbush diabetes is a term used to describe ketoacidosis-resistant diabetes because it tends to be diagnosed in younger adults, as opposed to traditional type 2 diabetes which often presents later in life. Type 1.5 diabetes is another term used to describe the condition because it shares features of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Finally, ketosis-prone type 2 diabetes is used to describe this condition because patients with this form of diabetes may go in and out of ketosis, rather than experiencing it as a constant state.
