Merthiolate, also known as thiomersal, is a chemical compound commonly used as an antiseptic to prevent bacterial growth in wounds or minor cuts. The word merthiolate is a brand name that has been commonly used to refer to any antiseptic solution containing thiomersal. However, other synonyms for the word merthiolate include methylmercuric thiosalicylate, thimerosal, and sodium ethylmercurithiosalicylate. These compounds are also used as preservatives in vaccines, eye drops, and contact lens solutions. Despite its many uses, thimerosal has been subject to controversy due to concerns about its safety in vaccines. Nonetheless, it remains a widely used antiseptic in the healthcare industry.
