Mount Shasta, one of the tallest peaks in California, is surrounded by many synonyms. The 14,179-feet mountain is known as the White Mountain, and the Siskiyou Range. The Native American tribes called it several different names - "Sashta," "Wek-wek," and "Kara-uk." The mountain also receives the nickname of the "Matterhorn of the West" due to its resemblance to the Matterhorn mountain in the Swiss Alps. Apart from that, it's also referred to as one of the sacred mountains in North America.
