Louwala-Clough means "smoking mountain" in the language of the Klickitat tribe, while Lawetlat'la means "keeper of the fire" in the language of the Cowlitz tribe. Loowit, on the other hand, is derived from the Chinook Jargon and means "smoking mountain". These synonyms reflect the cultural significance of the volcano to the native tribes of the area.
