There are a number of synonyms for the famous volcano in Washington state commonly referred to as "Mt. St. Helens." Some may refer to it simply as "St. Helens," while others use its Native American name, "Loo-wit." Additionally, the mountain is sometimes referred to as a "stratovolcano," a type of cone-shaped volcano that is characterized by layers of ash, pumice, and other volcanic materials. During the 1980 eruption that made Mt. St. Helens famous, the mountain lost approximately 14% of its height and was reshaped by a massive landslide and the explosion of its summit. Despite this event, the mountain remains an important part of the Pacific Northwest landscape and a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
