Myelopathy refers to the neurological disorder of the spinal cord, which results in the degeneration of the spinal cord cells and the surrounding tissues. The word myelopathy originates from the Greek words "myelon" meaning spinal cord, and "pathos" meaning disease. Though the word myelopathy is widely used in the medical community, there are several synonyms for this term. These include spinal cord degeneration, spinal cord injury, spinal cord compression, spinal cord disease, and spinal cord damage. These synonyms are used interchangeably to describe the same condition, and can be used to help patients better understand their diagnosis and treatment options.
