Nagano is a city located in Japan, specifically in the central part of the Japanese island of Honshu. It is well known for its beautiful mountains as well as its hosting of the 1998 Winter Olympics. Synonyms for Nagano may include "The Winter Olympic City" due to the Winter Olympics being held there in '98. Alternatively, it may be known as the "Gateway to The Japanese Alps" since it offers quick access to mountains such as Mount Asama and Mount Kosha which are both popular destinations for hikers. Additionally, it is often called "The Land of Faith" because of its many Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines.
