Nisin is a common bacterial peptide that is used widely in the food industry as a preservative. It is derived from lactic acid bacteria and has potent bactericidal activity against many common food-borne pathogens. Although "Nisin" is the most common name used for this peptide, there are many other synonyms that refer to the same compound. These include Nisina, Nisaplin, Nisolution, and NisinA. Each of these names may be used interchangeably to describe the same compound. Despite the different names, all of these products share the same functional properties and can be used effectively as a food preservative.
