NMO, or neuromyelitis optica, is a rare autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the optic nerve and spinal cord. The term NMO is often used to refer to this condition, although there are several other terms that can be used as synonyms. These include Devic's disease, opticospinal multiple sclerosis, and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). While NMO is a relatively new term, having only been coined in 2004, the condition itself has been known for over a century. As more research is conducted, it is hoped that synonyms for NMO will become less necessary as the medical community gains a better understanding of this complex disorder.
