NREM sleep or non-rapid eye movement sleep, is the stage that occurs during the first half of the sleep cycle. It is subdivided into three stages: N1, N2, and N3. During the NREM stage, there is a decrease in muscle activity and brain waves slow down. Due to its importance, several synonyms have been identified for the term NREM sleep. These synonyms include slow-wave sleep, quiet sleep, deep sleep, restorative sleep, non-dreaming sleep, and synchronized sleep. All these terminologies aim to explain the crucial role that NREM sleep plays in restoring the body and preparing it for the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep stage.
