Ononis, also known as restharrow, is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the legume family. There are several synonyms for the word Ononis, including rest-harrow, spiny broom, and hedgehog broom. Rest-harrow is derived from the plant's roots being difficult to plough through, causing the plow to "rest" when it encountered them. Spiny broom stems from the small thorns that grow along the plant's stems. Hedgehog broom is similarly named due to the thorny appearance of the plant.
