Osmerus Mordax, commonly known as the "smelt" fish, is a species of small, silver-colored fish found in cold coastal waters and estuaries. Due to the vastness of the English language, there are a variety of alternative names for this species. One example is "ice fish," which is inspired by the fact that smelt are often caught through holes in frozen bodies of water. Another synonym for Osmerus Mordax is "sparling," which has origins in the Old English word "spærlian," meaning "to move quickly." Interestingly, smelt are also colloquially referred to as "candlefish" due to their high oil content, which allows them to be dried and used as a wick in a candle.
