An overhand knot is a type of knot that is tied by simply looping a string or rope over itself and then pulling the end through the loop. Synonyms for the overhand knot include a thumb knot, a single knot, a writing knot, and a Simple Simon knot. The thumb knot is called so because it is easy enough to be tied using only the thumb and forefinger. The single knot derives its name from the fact that it is made using just one strand of rope. The term writing knot came into being because scribes used overhand knots to keep their parchment sheets flat while writing on them. The Simple Simon knot, on the other hand, was named after the nursery rhyme character who was "simple" and could only tie basic knots.
