Paleontologies refers to the study of ancient life forms and their evolution. However, there are several synonyms that can be used in place of the word paleontology. These include: paleozoology, which is the study of ancient animal life; paleobotany, the study of ancient plant life; paleoanthropology, the study of ancient human life; and paleoecology, the study of ancient ecosystems. Other possible synonyms include paleoichthyology, the study of ancient fish; paleoentomology, the study of ancient insects; and paleomycology, the study of ancient fungi. Regardless of the specific branch of paleontological research, all of these fields seek to understand the deep history of life on earth.
