Pereskia is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Cactaceae. Commonly known as rose cactus or leaf cactus, these plants also go by various synonyms like the old man cactus, Barbados gooseberry, and lemon vine. The term "old man cactus" is derived from the shaggy looking appearance of the plant which resembles an old man's beard. The Barbados gooseberry is so-called because of its small, edible fruit reminiscent of the gooseberry. The lemon vine gets its name from the sour, lemon-like taste of its fruit. Despite the different monikers, all these names refer to the same genus of cacti known for their distinct leaves and flowers.
