Peritoneal-renal syndrome is a term used to refer to a condition that affects both the peritoneum, which is the lining of the abdominal cavity, and the kidneys. This syndrome is also known by other names, including peritoneal-kidney syndrome, encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis, and abdominal cocoon syndrome.
Although these terms refer to the same condition, they may be used in different contexts depending on the underlying cause and specific symptoms of the syndrome. Peritoneal-renal syndrome typically occurs in patients with end-stage renal disease who undergo long-term peritoneal dialysis. The condition is characterized by the formation of a fibrous membrane around the abdominal organs, which can lead to bowel obstruction and kidney failure.
