The Persian Gulf War, also known as the Gulf War, First Gulf War, Gulf War I, Kuwait War, and Desert Shield/Desert Storm, was a military conflict between Iraq and a coalition led by the United States in 1990-1991. The conflict resulted from Iraq's invasion and annexation of Kuwait. The war saw the deployment of over 500,000 military personnel and resulted in the death of thousands of people on both sides. While the war is commonly referred to as the Persian Gulf War or Gulf War, it has several synonyms due to its complex causes and significance.
