A phaser is a device that emits energy beams in science fiction stories. Although commonly known as phasers, there are many other terms for the weapon in different series. For instance, in the Star Trek movie series, phasers are also referred to as disruptors. In the Battlestar Galactica series, the militarized forces use weapons which are similar to phasers, known as pulse rifles. The weapons in the Star Wars movie franchise are called blasters but also resemble phasers in some ways. Phaser-like weapons also appear in gaming, where they are often referred to as plasma cannons or laser cannons. Ultimately, these synonyms all serve the same purpose - to showcase a powerful sci-fi weapon in use.
