"Phocoena sinus" is the scientific name for the smallest member of the porpoise family, the vaquita. This elusive mammal is native to the Gulf of California and is critically endangered, with only an estimated 10 individuals remaining in the wild. Synonyms for the vaquita include cochito, desert porpoise, Gulf of California harbor porpoise, and gulf porpoise. The vaquita's unique markings, including dark circles around the eyes and lips, make it easily distinguishable from other porpoises. Conservation efforts are currently underway to save this rare species from extinction, including fishing bans and habitat protections.
