Plectrophenax nivalis, commonly known as the snow bunting, is a passerine bird that breeds in the high Arctic tundra and wintering in more southerly latitudes. This little bird's frequent movements across long distances have given rise to several nicknames such as snowbird and snowflake. The snow bunting gets its scientific name from the Greek words "plektron" meaning a tool for plucking strings, and "phenakos" meaning deceiver or imposter. Other synonyms used for the snow bunting include Plectrophanes nivalis, Calcarius nivalis, Emberiza nivalis, and one lesser-known name, the snow finch. Though the snow bunting may have different monikers, this little bird's charm and beauty remains undeniably endearing.
