Polyzoan is a scientific term used for a group of aquatic invertebrate animals belonging to the phylum Bryozoa. Polyzoans are commonly referred to as moss animals, because of their growth habit and appearance. Other synonyms for polyzoan include Bryozoans, Ectoprocta, and Sea Mats. These small, colonial animals have a wide variety of shapes and sizes and can be found in oceans, freshwater, and even on land. Their colonies consist of small, interconnected animals known as zooids, which work together to feed, reproduce, and protect themselves from predators. Polyzoans play an important role in aquatic ecosystems, providing a food source for many animals and helping to maintain a healthy balance of the ecosystem.
