Postpericardiotomy syndrome (PPS) is a medical condition that occurs as a result of surgery involving the heart and pericardium, which is the sac enclosing the heart. The syndrome manifests itself as chest pain, fever, and swelling, and it generally occurs after 1-6 weeks of the surgery. There exist several synonyms for the Postpericardiotomy Syndrome, including pericarditis, Dressler's Syndrome, and post-cardiac injury syndrome. While PPS is typically benign and self-limiting, it can lead to severe complications if left untreated. Physicians will often recommend anti-inflammatory medications and pain relievers to manage PPS symptoms and prevent further complications.
