Potlatches are a traditional North American custom involving feasting, gift-giving, and performances. In some cultures, they are also called the Tlingit word "Koo.eex'", meaning a formal invitation to a feast or celebration. Other synonyms for "potlatches" include "feasts," "festivals," "gatherings," "ceremonies," "celebrations," "rituals," and "traditions." These gatherings served as a way for indigenous communities to display their wealth and status, as well as to strengthen social bonds and alliances. Despite being outlawed by the Canadian government in the late 19th century and the United States government in 1934, many First Nations communities continue to practice the tradition today as a way to reclaim their heritage and cultural identity.
