A preamplifier, commonly termed as a preamp, is an essential device that enhances the signal from a microphone or musical instrument before being sent to the main amplifier. Several synonyms are used to refer to the preamplifier, such as preamp, pre, microphone preamp, head amplifier, and front-end amplifier. As technology advances, the preamplifier's design and functionality have evolved, and so have the synonyms used to refer to it. Recently, the term "line driver" has gained popularity, which pertains to the device's capability to boost the audio signal's strength and power. Similarly, the term "booster" is also used interchangeably with the preamp as it denotes the same amplification function.
