Procyon lotor is the scientific name for the North American mammal commonly known as the raccoon. While "raccoon" is the most commonly used synonym, there are several other words that can be used interchangeably to refer to this animal. Some of these synonyms include "ringtail," "coonskin," "coon cat," "wash bear," and "masked bandit." "Ringtail" is often used because of the raccoon's distinctive ringed tail, while "wash bear" refers to the raccoon's tendency to wash its food before eating. The name "masked bandit" was given to the raccoon because of its black mask-like markings around its eyes, which are reminiscent of the mask worn by a robber.
