Pyocyanase is an enzyme produced by the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa that is believed to play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease. The enzyme is also known as pyocyaninase or pyocyanin oxidase. Although these terms are often used interchangeably, there are some subtle differences between them. Pyocyaninase specifically refers to the enzyme that catalyzes the breakdown of pyocyanin, a blue-green pigment produced by P. aeruginosa. Pyocyanin oxidase refers to any enzyme that oxidizes pyocyanin, regardless of whether it belongs to the P. aeruginosa species or not. Other synonyms for pyocyanase include POC, PCO, and PCY.
