Rangifer tarandus, commonly known as reindeer, has a few synonyms. One of the most commonly used is caribou, which is used mainly in North America. Another commonly used synonym is tuktu, which is an Inuktitut word used by the Indigenous peoples of northern Canada. In Russia and other parts of Europe, the animal is often referred to as the Siberian or Eurasian reindeer. The Sami people, who are indigenous to parts of Scandinavia, use the term buorre-biergga or fávllá in their languages to refer to the animal. Other less commonly used synonyms for R. tarandus include woodland caribou, barren-ground caribou, and mountain caribou, which refer to different subspecies of the animal found in specific regions.
