Rentier is a French word that refers to a person who lives off of rent or non-labor income. Though not commonly used in English language, there are several synonyms for rentier including, but not limited to, retiree, annuitant, pensioner, non-worker, non-earner, and investor. Retiree and pensioner are used to describe individuals who have retired and are living off of their pension or retirement savings. Annuitant, on the other hand, pertains to the person who receives periodic payments from an annuity. Meanwhile, investor refers to someone who earns income through the investment of their assets. Other related terms that may be used interchangeably with rentier are trust fund baby and independently wealthy.
