Retroviruses are a type of virus that uses RNA to encode their genetic information, instead of DNA. They have the unique ability to convert their RNA into DNA using the enzyme reverse transcriptase, which allows them to integrate their genetic material into the host cell's DNA. Some synonyms for retrovirus include retro-element, LTR-retrotransposon, endogenous retrovirus (ERV), and Gypsy retrotransposon. Endogenous retroviruses are those that have become a permanent part of the host genome and can be passed from generation to generation. LTR retrotransposons are retroviruses that lack the ability to create a virus particle and are only capable of copying themselves within the genome.
