Rinderpest, also known as cattle plague, is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, buffaloes, goats, and sheep. The disease causes fever, diarrhea, and dehydration, and can result in death in up to 90% of infected animals. Synonyms for rinderpest include bovine plague, steppe murrain, and pneumoenteritis. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) officially declared rinderpest eradicated in 2011, making it the second disease in history (after smallpox) to be eradicated globally. However, vigilance is still required to prevent any future outbreaks or re-emergence of the disease.
